Safeguarding vs FSCS: what protects your money

E-money safeguarding (Gemba)
Safeguarded funds
Your funds are held in a segregated account at a prudentially regulated bank, separate from Gemba's own operating funds. If Gemba becomes insolvent, the segregated funds are ring-fenced and returned to customers through an administration process. This is a requirement under the FCA's e-money safeguarding rules.
FSCS (high-street banks)
FSCS-protected deposits
Up to £85,000 per depositor is guaranteed by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme if a bank fails. FSCS protection is automatic, does not depend on insolvency administration, and pays out within 7 days. Only firms with a banking licence (not payment institutions) are FSCS-eligible.

If you need FSCS protection — for example, you hold balances above £85,000 and want the guarantee rather than the safeguarding ring-fence — you need a bank account. Gemba is not a bank and does not offer FSCS protection. We explain this clearly on every product page.
